English for Medical Purposes: Design a Course for Chinese Clinical Doctors for Overseas Exchange

  1Introduction

  Nowadays,anincreasinguseofEnglishisdemandedinspecificareas,suchasbusiness,science,tourismespeciallyinChina.Inaddition,becauseofthenecessitiesofintroducingtheadvancedmedicaltechniquesfromwesterncountries,moreandmoreChinesemedicalstaffinvariousskill-focusedfieldsissenttowesterncountriesforlearningpurposes.Clinicaldoctors,especially,formalargeproportionofthemedicalstaffthatissentoverseasannually.

  ThispaperwillfocusonthedevelopmentofanEnglishlanguagecoursefortheChineseclinicaldoctorsbeforetheyaredispatchedoverseasandtoworkinforeignhospitals.Beforethedesignofthecoursecanbedescribed,thespecificlanguageneedsofthesedoctorsshouldbeclearlyanalyzedandidentified.Then,clinicaldoctorswillbegivenintermsoftheirlinguistic,communicativeandcross-culturalneeds.Lastly,aprocedureofthecoursedesignwillbeillustratedbasedontheneedsanalysis.

  2.NeedsofChineseclinicaldoctors

  ThemainstreamEnglishteachingmethodinAsiaisstilltheGrammar-Translationmethod,whichprioritizestherotememorizationtomasterthegrammaticalstructureswithlittlefocusonthespokenformofthelanguage.Also,clinicaldoctorsrarelyhavetheopportunitiestouseEnglishinChina.Moreover,theynearlyhavenoopportunitiestouseEnglish,especiallywhentheyspeakinEnglishunlesstheirworkingenvironmentrequiresthemto.Therefore,theproficiencyleveloftheexchangedclinicaldoctors,theirlinguisticneedsaswellasthecommunicativeneedswillbeimaginativelyillustratedaccordingtotheliteratureswhichareaboutthemedicalstaff'sneedsforEnglishasasurvivingtoolofworkinginforeignhospitals.

  2.1Linguisticneedsforfuturecareerinoverseashospitals

  TheneedsoftheChineseclinicaldoctorsnotonlyincludeprofessionalEnglishbutalsoEnglishforsurvival,socialandculturalintegrationinthenewcountry.However,thisassignmentwillmainlyfocusontheprofessionallinguisticneedsofthesedoctors.

  Intermsofthefourbasiclanguageskills-listening,speaking,readingandwriting,speakingmightbethemostimportantfortheChineseclinicaldoctors,followedbylistening,readingandwriting.

  Speaking:readingandwritingareconsiderablyemphasizedwhenthemedicalstafflearnedEnglishduringtheirpre-serviceperiodinuniversitiesundertheexam-directededucationalbackground.Thus,speakingisthefirstneglectedlanguageskillformostclinicaldoctors.Forthoseclinicaldoctors,theirdailyworkinevitablyincludescommunicatingwithpatientsandtheirrelatives.Thefunctionsofspeakingincludegreetings,interpreting,explaining,queryingandcommunicatingwithpatientsandcolleaguesinanappropriateway.

  Listening:listeningisthesecondneglectedareawhichhasgreatsignificanceforthemedicalstaffthatisgoingtoworkinaforeignenvironment.Thisisbecausetheyhavetoquicklyunderstandthepatients'descriptionoftheirsymptomsandthengivetherighttreatmentoftheirillness.Inaddition,medicalmeetingsaretypicalcontextswherepapersandpresentationsofwhateverqualitycanbeheard.Therefore,theclinicaldoctorsarealsosupposedtoimprovetheirlisteningabilitywhichtheyseldompracticedincollegeoruniversities.

  Reading:specifically,whatAsianclinicaldoctorsneedtoimprovetheirprofessionalknowledgeinaforeigncountryistocomprehendthearticlesandjournalsonclinicalareawhicharewritteninEnglish.Inaddition,mostoftheauthoritymedicalpublicationsarewritteninEnglish.Eveninthecountrieswherethemother-tongueisnotEnglish,anincreasingnumberofjournalarticlesareEnglishthesedays.
